The
Shaolin Temple, located
at the north side
of Shaoshi Hill of
the Songshan Mountain
in Henan Province,
was established in
A.D.495, the era of
the Emperor Wendi
of North Wei Dynasty.
The main building,
Daxiong Palace, implements
the perfect facilities
like grand momentum,
bright drawing, poly-posturing
relief, magnific figures,
round smoke, and rich
religionary atmosphere;
while the Tianwang
Palace is a richly
ornamented building
with a resplendent
and magnificent appearance,
and the inside images
of the Four Powerful
Gods looks forceful
and imposing; furthermore,
the abbot’s room where
the past abbots lived,
is really quiet and
elegant, and it is
mentioned that Emperor
Qianlong of the Qing
Dynasty had stayed
and left poems there.
The bronze statue
of Bodhidharma (Damo),
the Indian dignitary,
is offered sacrifice
in the Lixue Pavilion
(also called Damo
Pavilion) behind the
abbot’s room. It is
said that, in A.D.527,
the Indian eminent
monk had settled down
here, and gathered
lots of chiliasts
to impart Dhyana and
have them study martial
art for body building.
Since then, Shaolin
Temple turned into
the ancestral temple
of Chinese Buddhism.
In the early Tang
Dynasty, the martial
monks of Shaolin Temple
had contributed their
strength in the crusade
against Wang Shichong
launched by Li Shimin
- the great emperor
of Tang Dynasty, and
they obtained handsome
rewards after the
war, so as to take
the honor of the “NO.1
Temple on the Earth”.
Due to the event,
the Shaolin Gongfu
became famous at home
and abroad, and the
story that the emperor
was rescued by thirteen
brave monks holding
the waddies has been
broadcast widely.
Nowadays, the monks
of Shaolin Temple,
study martial art
industriously, incorporate
things of diverse
nature, and especially
have left some very
deep footprints in
the ground bricks
in the palace which
is caused by the stamp
when practicing gongfu;
meanwhile, the “Lin
Boxing Faction” with
consummate technique,
has been in circulation
up to the present,
and given a profound
influence to the people,
having a high credit
in the world.
The micro-sight
of Shaolin Temple
in the Splendid China
Park is built by patterning
the real ancient Shaolin
Temple according to
a 1:15 proportion.
It has kept the magnific
and demure religion
atmosphere. For the
famous Five-Hundred-Arhat
of Shaolin Temple,
the character model
has its special art
feature, and the lines
are concise and clear;
meanwhile, each has
a different facial
form and pose, and
has expressed a lively
individuality and
lifelike image.
